Bencana Alam : Taufan Nargis

Taufan Nargis: Korban 22,000, hilang 41,000


BENCANA... Gambar semalam yang diambil dari udara ini menunjukkan sebahagian kemusnahan teruk, termasuk bumbung rumah diterbangkan angin, ekoran Taufan Nargis di Delta Irrawaddy, Myanmar.
YANGON 6 Mei – Angka korban terbaru Taufan Nargis kini hampir mencecah 22,000 orang, manakala 41,000 lagi dikhuatiri hilang.
Stesen televisyen Myanmar melaporkan sehingga pukul 12 tengah hari ini, seramai 21,793 orang terkorban dan 40,695 yang lain masih hilang di wilayah Irrawaddy.
“Sementara di Yangon sendiri, seramai 671 dilaporkan terkorban, 670 cedera dan 359 orang yang lain hilang,” lapor stesen televisyen tempatan lewat hari ini.
Pengumuman terbaru itu menunjukkan peningkatan mendadak angka korban apabila media kerajaan sebelum ini menganggarkan lebih 15,000 orang maut dalam taufan terburuk itu.
Taufan Nargis turut melanda beberapa daerah lain, namun tiada laporan mengenai bilangan mangsa yang terkorban setakat ini.
Sementara itu, kebimbangan terhadap ancaman wabak penyakit kini mula melanda Myanmar.
Bekalan air yang kotor dan sistem sanitasi yang rosak teruk dikenal pasti antara punca yang akan memburukkan lagi keadaan.
Dengan keadaan yang semakin buruk, Myanmar yang memiliki sistem kesihatan paling teruk di dunia dijangka berhadapan dengan jumlah kematian yang semakin meningkat ekoran wabak penyakit dan kelemahan sistem kesihatan.
Pertubuhan Kesihatan Sedunia (WHO) kini sedang menunggu kebenaran untuk menghantar pasukan kesihatan.
Pasukan bantuan menghadapi kesukaran untuk menghantar bantuan kerana sistem komunikasi dan pengangkutan hampir lumpuh berikutan bencana itu, kata jurucakap WHO, Vismita Gupta-Smith.
Kebimbangan lain termasuklah penyakit berkaitan pernafasan terutama di kalangan kanak-kanak yang terpaksa tidur di luar serta mereka yang mengalami kecederaan akibat taufan.
